Hello from your new Committee! To learn more about us please visit our new website: www.theartssocietyvictoria.co.uk As you will see we are gradually building our new website. We intend to communicate with Members through the website and our social media channels. In addition we will have copies of our newsletters on the website. For those of you who are more comfortable with more traditional media we are happy to provide that too – so please let us know. We are very conscious that running a Society for Members means we need to listen to what you want so please do get in touch in the following way: Email – chair@theartssocietyvictoria.co.uk You will see we have set up a feedback form on the website Past Committee In this our first newsletter we would like to thank the past Committee for their tireless work to make The Arts Society such as vibrant Society, something that was evident by the turnout at the event in April. There were many challenges for the team not least a pandemic but they were not perturbed and worked very hard to keep the Society on the road. There were 200 people at the event and we all had an enjoyable evening learning more about tea, coffee, chocolate and the English Social Revolution. We enjoyed having the opportunity to meet members old and new to celebrate The Arts Society Victoria. ![]() ![]() So far we have a confirmed talk on ‘Rubens and Women’, a lecture on Rachmaninov, and a talk from Will Gompertz the Barbican Centre’s Artistic Director. There are more events being organised as we go to press, please keep visiting our upcoming events page. We are conscious that we are all bombarded with information on a regular basis and therefore we are going to keep newsletters short and punchy which we hope you will find entertaining and informative. We will be in touch with details of our July event as soon as possible. Exams are taking place at Greycoat School so not only are we busy sorting an event but we are also looking for a venue!MembershipWe have looked at subscriptions and have decided, regrettably that we have to increase membership fees. The service, which begins at 11.30am traditionally coincides with varnishing day at the RA, which prefaces the Summer Exhibition, and begins with a colourful procession along Piccadilly from the RA to St James’, accompanied by a steel band, and with the traffic being suitably halted! All the famous living artists are usually there, and it is a compact service lasting an hour with joyful and celebratory music and readings, together with a brief, informative and erudite address given by the well known Rector of St James’, the Revd Lucy Winkett, who is also chaplain to the RA and also a well known broadcaster on Radio 4.
