The Defence of the Realm: The Authorized History of MI5

MI5 agents have defended Britain against enemy subversion for more than 100 years. In this authorised account, writer and historian Christopher Andrew exposes the British Security Service as never before – its inner workings, clandestine operations, its failures as well as successes and triumphs.

The book covers MI5’s role in the First World War, the rise of communism and Naziism between the wars, WWII and Double Cross, the Cold War, end of Empire, the Irish Troubles and rise of terrorism.

Deidre, with a long and distinguished career in the Security Service, was also closely involved in the book’s production and publication so we are uniquely privileged to have her retrospective on the organisation and its work. Still sworn to secrecy of course but who knows what might accidentally be let slip!!
