Exciting news – we have secured our first lecture of the new 2023-24 Lecture series! DATE and LOCATION to be CONFIRMED…. A lecture from the well-respected art historian Dr Amy Orrock, Senior Curator at Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park.

She is coming to tell us all about the forthcoming Rubens Exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery with which she has been very much involved. Her specialist subject is 16th and 17th Century Northern European Art on which she has lectured widely. Her studies started at the University College London and the University of Edinburgh completing her PhD on Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

Dr Orrock will explain how the Exhibition discovers a different side to Rubens. We will learn how the leading women in his life came to shape the artist we know today. The Show is entitled ‘Rubens & Women’. This major exhibition of the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) will contain a diverse range of his paintings and drawings.

The popular assumption is that Rubens only painted one type of woman, but this Exhibition challenges this view. It provides a more nuanced view of the varied and important place occupied by women, both real and imagined, in his world. From the role played by his female patrons and family members to his profound faith, artistic beliefs and great loves the Exhibition features masterpieces from both international and private collections.

There are 40 paintings, drawings and archive material in this exciting collection, many of them are being viewed in the UK for the first time. An exhibition that truly reconsiders one of art history’s most influential figures.

The Show runs at The Dulwich Picture Gallery from the 27 September 2023 – 28 January 2024.
