Dr Anja Shortland gave us a thought-provoking insight into the world of art ownership – when does a painting really belong to someone, how does one gauge its provenance and when is it really yours!

Just because Granny passed it down to you doesn’t necessarily make you its rightful owner!

An interesting evening enjoyed by all – albeit a little chilly in the church!

Talking to Anja afterwards she suggested two books that might be of interest to members, namely:

‘Kidnap – Inside the Ransom Business’
‘Lost Art – the Art Lost Register Casebook’

Moving on to next month …

We have something a bit different that we hope you will enjoy!

Catherine Moorehead  – ‘Recollections of RumDoodling’ a mountain explorer’s adventures

Read more about Catherine, who is just back from collecting the Kekoo Naoroji Prize (named after Kekoo Noroji the distinguished Himalayan Club bibliophile)

This is the biggest award in Asia for mountaineering writing and one of the ‘big three’ global awards.

You may be wondering how mountaineering is related to art  …in the words of Robert Louis Stevenson  ‘To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive’.

Fortunately, Catherine achieved both, and with aplomb!

Selecting a route, appreciating local architecture, ethnic dress, languages, plants, handicrafts, together with simply stunning views achieved by some challenging ascents and descents were all an aesthetic adventure and experience. But surely, the real art is how to enrich one’s own mind through travel experiences. This talk is a must for anyone who wants their horizons expanded! She has written a number of other books on Mountaineering and this promises to be a really interesting event so please feel free to brings friends along …

We will again be in the Church so in the spirit of the talk – I’m off to find my skiiing jumper!
