NB: location “St Stephen with St John, 38-42 Rochester Row, London SW1P 1LE
Lee Butcher’s PhD research with King’s College London and English Heritage examined what Queen Victoria’s residence of Osborne tells us about the public roles of the monarchy in cultural, governmental, diplomatic and imperial spaces. In this talk he will explore how Osborne became the architectural and artistic centre piece of Victoria’s role as the Empress of India. The talk will situate those activities within a wider context of the monarchy’s role in India and it’s position within nineteenth-century debates about British imperialism in India.
